Increasing our Profile
Members have commented in recent times that they have seen a tangible change in the way the Club is presented and portrayed to them as well as the non-cricketing world, so we thought we would give you some of the background and the encouraging outcomes these have brought.
In March 2018, we stepped up efforts to promote the image of the Club and its facilities and explore the commercial potential. Many, if not all, Cricket Clubs are having to address this pressing need. The Board worked through a Sub-Group consisting of Jason Jones (Chairman), Rod Turnbull (Past Chairman), John Howell (Acting Treasurer) and Jon Taylor (Head of Clubhouse Facilities). Sunil Varu was appointed in April to give the Club direction, to engage with the broader Stirling District community and to begin to make the business connections. Sunil’s background is in developing Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) built around Business Plans, and also marketing and communications. He has worked across Scotland, from Ayr to Kirkcaldy, from Dunoon and Largs to Edinburgh’s West End. Sunil played cricket from school through to his University days and for a Club in West Sussex before moving north of the border to live in Ayr, where he also played at the old Cambusdoon ground.
The Sub-Group approved Sunil’s Plan of Action to improve the Club’s branding and social media communications, engage better with Club Members, build a database of business contacts with whom the Club could communicate about the Club’s facilities and sponsorship opportunities and to stage a Corporate Open Day to showcase the facilities to the local influencers within the business community. The Open Day highlighted the relatively low profile of the Club even from business men born and bred in Stirling, although they all gave very positive feedback on the Club’s facilities.
Having started on the journey to raise the profile of the Club, there is now the beginning of a growing interest in hiring the facilities and from commercial interests. To assist that, we have developed fresh communications in respect of our offers to private and commercial customers together with prospective sponsors. These can be found here:
Since April, the Club has used the services of Rohan Puri, a student at Stirling University, to strengthen the social media communications. The majority of this is now undertaken and coordinated by Rohan and, as Members will agree, the constant uploading of posts and tweets has given a new energy to the Club and we are celebrating the achievements of the Club as well as individuals much more. Rohan is a Masters Degree student and a former Sports Journalist from India with a passion for the game of cricket. His Masters degree focuses on the challenges that face cricket clubs in Scotland and has interviewed several key people from various Clubs from across Scotland.
The regular social media communications has seen an encouraging rise in the engagement we are having with the Club’s ‘Followers’ and ‘Likers’. Many positive comments have been received about the efforts being made to present the Club visually in its best light, as well as through social media, and special mention must be made of the sterling efforts of Joan and David Anderson who have put in a power of work in tidying up around the exterior of the Club for the Open Day and beyond. The Club is certainly looking a picture these days.
Next on the menu is a programme of visits to other clubs who have made a success of their commercial ventures, to see what we can learn. We had a good day exploring and exchanging ideas with Arbroath, Forfarshire and Carlton Cricket Clubs all of whom welcomed the meetings with us. We will report on that next time.
