This week at Stirling County CC - WB 5/7/21
It seems that, with the thunderstorms and torrential downpours experienced over the weekend, the true Scottish summer has finally arrived (not this imposter summer that we’ve been having, with all its glorious sunshine and completed cricket matches). Unfortunately, this return to the soggy norm has coincided with a particularly action-packed week for the club, with plenty of cricket scheduled to be played at New Williamfield. Hopefully the weather forecasters will be proved wrong (a not exactly unheard-of phenomenon), and we will escape the worst of the rain to allow us to enjoy another week of great cricket!
After having the last two Rowan Cup games cancelled (once due to the rain and the second time thanks to a forfeit by Drumpellier), the 1st XI will be keen to contest their home semi-final match against West of Scotland this Thursday. A win for the in-form Doggies would place them in the final and move them just three wins away from a trip to Spain! The action on Thursday begins at 6pm.
Saturday sees the 1st XI continue their league campaign after this Saturday’s rained-off match. Currently sitting 2nd in the league, the New Williamfield men will be looking to apply even more pressure to league leaders Clydesdale as they travel to West Glasgow to play West of Scotland for the second time in three days.
At New Williamfield on Saturday the 2nd XI will look to recapture that winning feeling when they look to put in a strong performance in their match against Motherwell. Although sitting bottom of the table, Stirling’s 2nd team will still be confident of repeating their feat of two week’s previous (when they beat table-toppers GHK), with the young side seeing the return of several key players.
MJ’s Sunday XI will be hoping that the weather is kinder to them this weekend than the previous one as they look to finally resume their season after a hiatus of several weeks. If the weather gods are indeed forgiving, they will be playing host to Kismet in the SPCU development league, with the game scheduled to start at 1pm.
Finally, our Wednesday XI will be playing against Callander as they approach the pointy end of their league campaign. Sitting neck-and-neck with Milngavie at the top of the table, Stirling’s midweek warriors can make a huge stride towards title success with a win over the always dangerous Callander side.
Greenock will be the visitors this week in the latest J2/3 league match. Our youngsters will be confident after winning against a strong West of Scotland/Hillhead side last Friday and will be boosted by the return from holiday of several players.
Our ladies team took a break from the Trossachs T10 competition last week as they instead enjoyed a hugely successful Wee Bash up north in a gloriously sunny Forfar (always a fantastic place in which to play cricket). They resume the T10 fun this week, however, and will be again travelling north, but only for a few miles as they play for the first time on Dunblane’s new artificial wicket.
